Key Facts Multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) is used in mobile radio (3GPP release 7, EUTRA/LTE) but also in wireless local (IEEE 802.11n) and regional radio networks (IEEE 802.16, e.g. WiMAX™). The higher the statistical independence of channel characteristics, the better the data rate and transmission quality. For MIMO tests, therefore, simulating these channel characteristics is absolutely essential. Since there is one transmission from each transmitting to each receiving antenna, N2 fading channels have to be provided in the simulator for an N?N MIMO system. Due to the geometric antenna arrangement, the channel characteristics are not independent of each other under real operating conditions. As a result, the individual channels must be intercorrelated to realistically simulate the entire transmission path. The R&S®SMU200A vector signal generator can be equipped with two baseband generators and two fading simulator boards. The R&S®SMU-K74 option then enables four logical fading simulators that can be correlated by setting the parameters in the channel matrix within the generator. This means, for tests on MIMO systems up to 2x2, users only need one R&S®SMU200A vector signal generator. Measurements on MIMO systems with more antennas, for example 2x4 MIMO, can be performed by combining two R&S®SMU200A.
